When I was going through Hospital Corps School one of my instructors, (then HM1, now HMC (Retired) E. J. Minette, told a story of a fellow corpsman named Bob Bush, whose picture and citation hung on the wall with the other 20 Hospital Corpsmen who had received the MOH. I would recall that story over the years. About 13 years ago I had the fortune and opportunity to meet Bob Bush and his lovely wife, Wanda, while in Hawaii. We have maintained contact through the years. He was our Guest of Honor at the Hospital Corps Birthday Ball in San Diego in June, 1990. The story of he and Wanda, (high school sweethearts), and what has transpired over the years is one that I will always admire. His citation for his actions that earned him the Medal of Honor appears on the Medal of Honor page.

Gary Chapman and I go way back (about 20 years). When I first met him it was when he had a needle in his hand and was aiming for my arm to draw blood (something that I detest immensely). Being a grumpy chief as I was, I told him he had one shot at it and if he missed he had better have his track shoes on. ( I was so busy telling him what I would do to him that I didn’t know he had already drawn the blood). One fine lab tech and one fine sailor. A credit to the CPO community and the Navy in my book. His wife, Gail, is a former HMC and now a LCDR, MSC.
Being able to meet, serve with, and maintain, lasting friendships is one of the many fine opportunities the Navy afforded me, for which I am so thankful.
